RFE/RL is funded by the U.S. Congress through the United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM). USAGM is independent federal government agency that oversees all U.S. civilian international media. In addition to RFE/RL, this includes Voice of America, Radio and TV Marti, Radio Free Asia, Alhurra, and Radio Sawa.
How is the radio free?
Radio doesn’t require any form of monthly subscription, due to being advertiser-funded, unlike many current media services.
Why do radio stations not pay royalties?
The primary justification is that radio airplay is a public broadcast, covered by public performance royalties, and performance royalties are only paid out to the copyright owner of the composition, NOT the master recording.
