If you finish the conversation and leave the tent, the game saves which villager the camper named and will never select another. If the game doesn’t get a chance to save, it will simply select another resident of your island at random to swap with next time. Reload the game and invite the camper again.

How do I get people to come to my campsite?
Once your first camper moves in, you’ll be able to use Animal Crossing Amiibo or Amiibo cards at the Nook Stop machine in Resident Services to invite the associated villager to visit your campsite. Just interact with the machine and select the new Amiibo option to then scan the Amiibo or Amiibo card.
Can you invite a camper if your island is full?
